About this event

In this class, you'll learn about working safely with a MIG welder, and various MetalLab tools including the angle grinder, bench grinders, and hydraulic bandsaw.

Students will learn how to prepare their material for welding, about different types of welds, and tacking and laying down a simple bead. You'll perform various operations to become comfortable and proficient with the safe usage of these tools.

We require that students must bring their own safety glasses or they will be available for purchase at the front desk for $5. They are also require to bring their own welding helmets and gloves.

Please note, due to COVID-19, the following measures are now in place for this class:

  • It is recommended that everyone sanitize their hands upon entering the building.

Set up welder, prep pieces for welding, lay a clean weld bead.

Prerequisite Courses

Required: None

Equipment Access

MIG welder, Angle Grinder, Bench Grinders, Hydraulic Band Saw

Safety Requirements:

  • Safety glasses
  • Welding Helmet
  • Welding Gloves
  • Closed-toed shoes
  • Remove dangling jewelry
  • Tie back long hair 
  • Natural fiber clothing (wool or cotton recommended)

Recommended:

  • Hearing protection
  • Particle filter mask or dust mask

** Please note, the material we use for welding contains nickel. If you have any allergies to metals you may bring your own respirator mask with a positive filtered air supply. **

FAQ

Is there an age limit to enter the event?

The minimum age for participants is 13 years old with a participating guardian or 18 otherwise.  

What are my parking options at MakerLabs?

MakerLabs' parking lot is located on the east side of the building on the corner of Hawks Avenue and East Cordova Street.

Can I sign up for the member rate?

If you sign up for a membership on the day of the class, you'll receive a refund for the difference between the general and membership class price.

How do I cancel or reschedule my class?

Refunds (minus Eventbrite fees), credits for future classes and orientations, or transferring a ticket to a future date, will only be provided if we are notified by email to hello@makerlabs.com at least 24 hours in advance of the class. For cancellation less than 24 hours before the class, we do not provide a refund, but we do offer a 50% credit towards a future class or orientation. No refunds or credits will be provided for no shows. If transferring a ticket to a future class date, students may only transfer their ticket once before forfeiting their original ticket, even if providing more than 24 hours notice.

What happens if I show up late?

Please arrive 15 minutes before the schedule start of the class so that it can start on time. Attendees arriving more than 5 minutes late will not be allowed in the class.
