Tackling Barriers to Innovation in the Ontario Energy System:
Why the Adoption Problem is Bigger than the Invention Problem and What we Can Do About It
Ron Dizy, the recently appointed Managing Director at the Advanced Energy Centre, will speak and engage in a collaborative discussion on the challenges of adoption. There is a tendency to focus on research and development – and to some extent commercialization – when discussing innovation. But many innovators find that the much bigger challenge is achieving adoption – even after innovative technologies or services are proven. Come hear Ron Dizy, the recently appointed Managing Director of the Advanced Energy Centre, discuss the challenges surrounding adoption – and engage in a collaborative discussion about how the Advanced Energy Centre might be able to catalyze solutions to this challenging problem.
Previous to his appointment at the Advanced Energy Center, Ron Dizy was President and CEO of ENBALA Power Networks, a smart grid technology company that offers grid optimization services to utilities and system operators to increase overall efficiency and reliability of the power systems. Ron is viewed as a thought-leader on innovation opportunities that lie within the evolution of the modern power system. Based on his well-respected perspective on the smart grid, he was recruited to the executive committee of the board for the Ontario Energy Association and the Association for Demand Response and Smart Grid. He was also elected chair of the Corporate Partners Committee of the Ontario Smart Grid Forum. His entire career has been focused on bringing new technologies to evolving markets, including spending nearly ten years as a venture capitalist (both as a direct investor and as a pension fund manager), co-founding a company specializing in artificial intelligence and gathering experience in major consulting firms. Ron holds a degree in industrial engineering from the University of Toronto.
About the Advanced Energy Centre
The Advanced Energy Centre is a private-public partnership, with founding partners including the Ontario Ministry of Energy, Siemens and Cap Gemini. The Centre's mission is to foster the adoption of innovative energy technologies in Ontario and Canada, and then to leverage those successes and experiences into international markets. Their work is focused on working collaboratively with the energy ecosystem to identify and address systemic barriers to innovation - ones that arise from the way the complex interactions of the actors in the energy system drive behaviour and interests.
Mindfirst (M1) is the organizer of the Mindfirst Energy Seminar series of private energy seminar lunches at Bennett Jones. Events are conducted under Chatham House Rule to respect speaker confidentiality.
