Description

Being a mother involves so much care taking. But how well are you taking care of yourself? Like they say on the plane, you need to put on your oxygen mask before helping your children. Self-compassion and mindfulness are powerful practices that offer much needed support to those of us navigating the challenges of being a mother. Research shows that self-compassion practices offer protection from the endless internal and external criticism that often accompanies parenting.

In this experiential course you will learn meditations and practices that will help you to become kinder to yourself, to feel more connected to others and to feel more grounded and present in your life, including with your children. Being in a group with other mothers, you will see you are not alone in your imperfections and mistakes and can expect to feel more normal, competent and connected. You will also get an opportunity to reconnect with parts of yourself that have been neglected as you take care of others, for example, creative practices and hobbies.

The course will be structured so that each week you learn about at least one new practice, including the science that supports its benefit. You will get to try the practice in the class and discuss it together as a group.

Course facilitator

Mindful Mums is facilitated by Sarah Housser, MA, RP. Sarah was the founding director of The Mindfulness Clinic in Toronto where she worked as a psychotherapist and ran Mindfulness-based groups for many years. She moved to Ottawa with her young family in 2016 and works as a psychotherapist at Ottawa River Psychology Group where she sees adults and teens.

Sarah’s approach to therapy is firmly grounded in Mindfulness and Self-Compassion. She has participated in intensive training on Mindfulness-Based therapy and groups and has more than 1000 hours of personal meditation practice. She has recently started deepening her training in the emerging field of Mindful Self-Compassion and has experienced first-hand, as well as through her private therapy clients, the powerful benefit of self-compassion for mothers.

This group will run every Wednesday from 10am-12pm starting January, 23rd and ending on February 27th.
