Event description

Description

While food should be all of nourishment, fuel, and medicine, I also believe that it should be celebrated and enjoyed.

Together, we will explore our relationship to food and to our bodies: from where we obtain our food and the importance of sustainable agriculture, eating local and in season with the cycles of nature, to the mind-body connection that occurs in the experience we have from selecting to preparing our food, and finally, the nourishment that we experience when we take the time to savour and enjoy our food.

We will discuss the physiological mechanisms of hunger and satiation and how they link the body and brain, the socio-cultural aspects of mindless eating, and the significance that our disconnect to food and eating has towards our overall health and wellbeing. We will navigate different ways to foster greater self-awareness with our individual bodies and how we can utilize this connection to nurture a healthy relationship with food.

Workshop attendees will be provided a blank notebook and pen for conscious journaling exercises and note-taking.

At the end of the final session, a simple, delicious, and nourishing plant-based meal will be shared to implement some of the principles and practices explored. Please note any allergies upon booking your space.

This is a three-part lab series, purchased as a set. See below for dates, times, and individual lab content. Attendance for all sessions is highly encouraged.

LAB 1: HOW YOU EAT IS JUST AS IMPORTANT AS WHAT YOU EAT

SUNDAY, APRIL 29 @ 11:30AM-1PM

This session lays the foundation for the work that will take place over the following couple of weeks. We will address the many forms of mindless eating, as well as explore concepts of disconnected consumption and anti-nourishment. We will also discuss the differences between mindless and emotional eating, why it is important to distinguish the two, and how we can manage each.

LAB 2: PHYSICAL ASPECTS OF EMOTIONAL EATING

SUNDAY, MAY 6 @ 11:30AM-1PM

This session delves more into the physical aspects of mindless vs. mindful eating. We will discuss true hunger in relationship to false hunger, as well as cravings and how we can tune into our bodies to identify these physical cues. We will also look at sleep and stress, and how these affect hormonal imbalances in the body that can perpetuate psychological and physiological cravings, as well as offer ways in which to manage stress and reduce these cravings.

LAB 3: MINDFUL, NOT MOUTHFUL: NAVIGATING EMOTIONAL EATING

SUNDAY, MAY 13 @ 11:30AM-2PM*

This session focuses on our societal and cultural associations to food in relation to the emotional or cognitive behaviours and habits we have developed over the years, from infancy to adulthood. We will address the ways in which societal expectations and familial or cultural obligations can impact our emotional responses to food. Practical solutions for how we can be more mindful and prioritize our own nourishment will be provided. We will implement practices with a final shared mindful eating experience.
