Event description
Join us on an adventure of Mindful Self-Compassion beginning Feb 29th. This workshop is weekly (Sat) for 8 weeks - no class April 11th.

About this Event

The Mindful Self-Compassion workshop is intended for anyone interested in enhancing their capacity for emotional well-being.

Research studies show that self-compassion is strongly associated with emotional well-being, coping with life challenges, lower levels of anxiety and depression, healthy habits such as diet and exercise, and more satisfying personal relationships.

In MSC you’ll learn to:

  • Practice mindfulness and self-compassion in daily life
  • Understand the proven health benefits of self-compassion
  • Motivate yourself with kindness rather than criticism
  • Handle uncomfortable emotions with greater ease
  • Transform challenging relationships
  • Manage caregiver fatigue
  • Practice the art of savouring and self-appreciation

MSC is a journey—an adventure in self-discovery and self-kindness. Self-compassion has the paradoxical effect of both soothing our emotional distress as well as opening us to the pain that we may have been unconsciously holding inside, often for many years. Therefore, challenging emotions are likely to surface during the program, including past trauma. MSC teachers are committed to helping participants feel safe and comfortable during the course. However, participants agree at the outset that they will take primary responsibility for their emotional well-being.

MSC is therapeutic, but it’s not therapy. It is not a replacement for medical or mental health care.

Highly recommended while participating in the MSC course:

The Mindful Self-Compassion Workbook by Kristin Neff and Chris Germer

It is also recommended, but not required, that participants read the following two books to get the most out of the training:

Self-Compassion: The Proven Power of Being Kind to Yourself by Kristin Neff

The Mindful Path to Self-Compassion by Christopher Germer

Instructors:

Dr. Anne DuVall, MD, CCFP(PC), FCFP, RYT500

Dr Anne DuVall is a Family Physician. She had a community family practice in Barrie, Ontario for over 30 years. Her clinical work now is centered in Palliative Care. She has completed her practicum with the Center for Mindful Self-Compassion and 500 hour Yoga Teacher Training at the Bliss studio in Barrie. During her many years of helping patients, Dr DuVall has discovered that practicing self-compassion allows for a more full and healthy life. Caring for yourself really makes a difference and you deserve it.

Emily Becker, Recreation Therapist, RYT250

Emily graduated from the University of Alberta in 2002 with a degree in Recreation and Leisure Studies with a specialization in Special Populations. In 2004 she began working with Island Health as a Recreation Therapist in both adult neurology and adult mental health. Emily continues to work part-time within the Outpatient Neurological Rehabilitation Program where she coaches patients in stress management and wellness through Mindfulness and relaxation techniques. Although her interest in Mindfulness was sparked in 2004, it was a 2007 retreat in Nepal which solidified her personal practice to this day. In her other work within a private clinic, she draws on this experience while teaching Mindfulness to those recovering from Post-Concussion Syndrome and Functional Neurological Disorder. As a natural extension of her interests, Emily completed a 250 hour Yoga Teacher Training in 2009 and continues to teach several classes each week. To complement these credentials and experience, she is currently studying to become a certified Mindful Self-Compassion Teacher through the Center for Mindful Self-Compassion.
