Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy

(MBCT) is suitable for people wishing to

enhance their general physical and mental



Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) is an evidence-based group therapy for preventing depressive relapse. 

Mindfulness is a form of awareness training with a focus on non-judgmental awareness to the present moment. Cognitive Behaviour Therapy is designed to bring awareness to the habitual negative thinking that leads to depressive and anxious patterns of mind. Combined, MBCT interrupts how we habitually react to situations, so we can choose to respond in more skillful ways.

Research has demonstrated MBCT is as effective as antidepressants in the prevention of depressive relapse or recurrence (Kuyken, 2008)

If you are experiencing stress, anxiety, recurrent depression or feel generally ‘dissatisfied’ with your life, a mindfulness course could help you develop skills to better respond to the ‘ups and downs’ of everyday living. Previous participants say that their course helped them to be more in the present moment, realise that they are not their thoughts, and be kinder to themselves.

What will I learn?

You will learn to deal more skilfully with the stresses and strains of daily living. Practicing the skill of deliberately paying attention to what happens in mind and body we become more familiar with the workings of our own mind patterns and habits, some habits that may no longer be helpful for us. You learn to spot our own ‘warning signs’ early, before the stress or depression become too overwhelming. We can then make plans for how best to respond, rather than react in our old familiar, often unhelpful ways.

There will be a combination of guided meditation practices and cognitive exercises. In between sessions, there will be home practice for people to do and we estimate this takes approximately 1 hour/day.

The programme is not being offered as a treatment for any specific physical or psychological conditions. It is not suitable for people who are currently experiencing very severe problems in these areas.

Does it work?

Research shows that practising mindfulness has many benefits. We have strong evidence that mindfulness-based programmes reduce anxiety, depression, and stress and help people cope with illness and pain (Khoury et al., 2013). Some studies show that the practice of mindfulness increases positive moods and cultivates compassion for self and others (Eberth & Sedlmeier, 2012; Khoury, Sharma, Rush, & Fournier, 2015). It may also improve some forms of attention and memory (Chiesa, Calati, & Serretti, 2011) and there is also preliminary evidence that practising mindfulness has measurable effects on the brain (Tang, Holzel, & Posner, 2015).

Participants Will Learn

Skills and practices to manage depression, anxiety and prevent relapse. By learning to identify your personal relapse signatures and symptoms of anxiety and depression, participants can effectively address these issues as they arise in everyday life. 

However, people without depression or anxiety will also find this program helpful in reducing stress and improving resilience in addressing negative self-talk and self-criticism.


A commitment to attendance and home practice activities is required. Participants are strongly encouraged to attend a day-long silent retreat but it is an optional part of the program.

If you are new to mindfulness, it is highly recommended that you pick up the course text, Mindfulness: An 8-week plan for finding peace in a frantic world by Danny Penman and Mark Williams (here). 



Learn practical ways to manage stress, burnout and anxiety.

This introduction to mindfulness course integrates content from Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy, and is designed to help promote well-being in your daily life.

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction is an 8-week program designed to help individuals learn how to respond differently in managing stress and chronic pain. This program combines health education, mindful stretching and guided meditations in providing an experiential practice.

Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy is a clinically proven program for preventing relapse into depression and reducing stress and anxiety. It combines the practice of mindfulness meditation with the tools of cognitive therapy. It increases our awareness of how we habitually react to situations, so we can choose to respond in more effective ways. 

This hybrid program will provide shorter meditations for beginners, with an emphasis on daily practice. Longer meditations will also be made available.



Facilitator Training

Derek Luk completed his graduate thesis on the use of mindfulness programs in reducing burnout for healthcare professionals. He has worked as a registered nurse for over 10 years in mental health, has taught over ten mindfulness 8-week programs. His professional training includes completing the 10-day intensive Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Facilitator Training offered by MBSR Ottawa Dr. Steven Hicks and Dr. Rachael Crowder, and a five-day Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy facilitator training offered by Susan Woods and Dr. Mark Lau. Derek completed his MBCT level 2 facilitator training under the guidance of Dr. Evan Collins and Dr. David Denis from the Centre for Mindfulness Studies.

  • Week 2: Living Inside Our Heads: Role of Perception

  • Week 3: Gathering the Scattered Mind: Impartial Observation

  • Week 4: Stress and Stress Reactivity: Recognizing Aversion

  • Week 5: Allowing/Letting Be: Mindfully Responding to Difficulty

  • Week 6: Thoughts Are Not Facts: Leaning Towards Discomfort

  • Week 7: Cultivating Self Care: Daily Practice

  • Week 8: Beginning of the End: Coming Full Circle


Each participant will recieve a summary of each topic, and guided meditations.

After tragically losing a colleague to suicide, and seeing the recent suicides related to other helping professionals, Derek recognized the urgent need for accessible and affordable mental health support, and founded Mimentra in December 2014.

Focusing on accessibility and prevention, the team from Mimentra have developed a mindfulness platform to support organizations in scaling mental health support.
