Course Text 


Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy, Second Edition



Facilitator Training


This practicum will immerse participants in the 8-week MBCT program as participants, facilitators and observers. Trainees will take on a variety of roles including teaching, providing and receiving feedback and developing skills of inquiry. Readings and home practice will be an essential part of the program. Relevant background will be provided in the areas of mindfulness, clinical research and CBT.



  • Facilitators are required to take an 8-week MBCT program or 5-day MBCT Intensive program prior to applying for facilitator training.

  • Previous experience wth Cogntive Behavioral Therapy is helpful, but not necessary.

  • Please purchase the MBCT training manual.

Participants Will Learn


  • Ways to deliver the 8-week MBCT program in a systematic manner

  • To engage in teach-backs to help hone their skills

  • How to receive feedback to enhance their guidance and inquiry skills

  • The underlying intentions, attitudes and attentional training skills developed in the practices/exercises

  • To hold the group using the MBCT model

Who Should Attend

This program is intended for mental health clinicians interested in deepening their understanding of MBCT and developing some foundational skills to facilitate MBCT. Having group therapy experience and working with people with depression are an asset prior to attending this training.

This program is best suited for clinicians who have experience with meditative practices and who have attended an 8-week MBCT. Please contact us before registering if you have not participated in an 8-week MBCT program.


What To Expect

This training will be an intensive training held over 5 days. You can expect to be immersed in the 8-week MBCT program. The course will follow a concentrated schedule, starting at 8:00am and ending at 4:30pm each day with an hour for lunch that will entail some readings and work.

Facilitator Training


Derek Luk completed his graduate thesis on the use of mindfulness programs in reducing burnout for healthcare professionals. He has worked as a registered nurse for over 10 years in mental health, has taught over ten mindfulness 8-week programs. His professional training includes completing the 10-day intensive Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Facilitator Training offered by MBSR Ottawa Dr. Steven Hicks and Dr. Rachael Crowder, and a five-day Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy facilitator training offered by Susan Woods and Dr. Mark Lau. Derek completed his MBCT level 2 facilitator training under the guidance of Dr. Evan Collins and Dr. David Denis from the Centre for Mindfulness Studies.





  • Day 1 Awareness to Auto-Pilot: Being vs Doing & Living Inside Our Heads: Role of Perception

  • Day 2:: Gathering the Scattered Mind: Impartial Observation & Stress and Stress Reactivity: Recognizing Aversion

  • Day 3: Allowing/Letting Be: Mindfully Responding to Difficulty & Thoughts Are Not Facts: Leaning Towards Discomfort

  • Day 4: Silent day of practice

  • Day 5: Cultivating Self Care: Daily Practice & Beginning of the End: Coming Full Circle


Participants will recieve a summary of each topic, and guided meditations.

After tragically losing a colleague to suicide, and seeing the recent suicides related to other helping professionals, Derek recognized the urgent need for accessible and affordable mental health support, and founded Mimentra in December 2014.

Focusing on accessibility and prevention, the team from Mimentra have developed a mindfulness platform to support organizations in scaling mental health support.

Mimentra also offers synchronous online and in-person mindfulness programs based on the 8-week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy program.
