Event description

Description

Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), is an innovative treatment program designed to prevent relapse in people who have recovered from depression and has shown promise in the treatment of mood disorders more generally. Self-knowledge is the basis of MBCT through coming out of automatic pilot and focusing on what is present, right now, with kindness and without judgment. Based on the research of Drs. Zindel Segal, Mark Williams, and John Teasdale and documented in their bookMindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy for Depression, the program integrates tools of cognitive therapy with the practice and clinical application of mindfulness meditation.

The heart of MBCT lies in acquainting participants with the habits of the mind that often characterize low mood and emotional instability, while simultaneously inviting them to develop a new relationship to these habits. Participants learn to view thoughts as events in the mind, independent of their content and emotional charge. They do not need to dispute, fix or change the thoughts, but rather hold them in a more spacious awareness, large enough to contain aspects of the self deemed both broken and whole.
