What is Intensive Training?

We like being able to offer intensives which share a lot of the same benefits of retreats but are less expensive and more accessible to people living in cities. Usually several days long, intensives are like being on retreat during the day, but—because we’re still in the middle of an urban centre, and going home at night—it’s a great opportunity to practice with the city too. Based on focused, community-oriented practice, intensive training provides the education and experiential practice​.

 

What is MBSR and MBCT?​

 

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is an empirically-supported 8-week psycho-educational group that teaches mindfulness meditation as a health intervention. Created by Jon Kabat-Zinn in 1979, MBSR offers participants the possibility to develop a different relationship to stress resulting from chronic physical and psychological conditions. Research has demonstrated improved physical, psychological, and behavioural outcomes.

Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) combines the practice of mindfulness meditation with the tools of cognitive therapy. It is 90% MBSR, and 10% Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).

This highly experiential workshop adapts this treatment to health-care providers for personal use. Participants will explore habitual modes of mind that characterize changes in mood while simultaneously developing skills and a new relationship to these states. In addition, participants will be introduced to the theoretical assumptions underlying the model as well as the application of MBCT in clinical settings.

This introductory intensive course is meant for general interest and is most suitable for those interested in the personal and professional applications of mindfulness including healthcare providers, other professionals, and those wishing to teach mindfulness-based interventions. There is no prerequisite for this course.

Participants will gain an understanding of the historical and scientific underpinnings of mindfulness and its application to stress and everyday life.

Who Should Attend

 

This program is open to the general public and is suited for those new to mindfulness practices. A review of the current neuroscience and clinical aspects will be provided, along with movement and stillness practices.

Participants Will Learn
 
  • To explore the application of mindfulness practices to managing stress, everyday life and difficult situations.

  • Learn mindfulness-based skills to dealing with negative moods, stress and anxiety through 5, 10, and 15 minute guided practices. Audio files included.

  • How to use MBSR and MBCT practices in addressing chronic pain, depression and anxiety at an introductory level.
