Description

Do you value mindful living? If so, we hope we can see you at the upcoming meeting!

Hello Friends/Colleagues,

Happy New Year to you all! You are receiving this message because you have expressed an interest in being a member of our organization. Mindfulness Halton/Peel Professionals' Community is a non-profit organization comprised of a group of professionals who utilize mindfulness both personally and professionally. We are dedicated to the principles of Mindful Living and meet every other month to support each other's meditation practices, to share related resources and to bring mindfulness out into our community in a formal way.

We were fortunate to have had two guest speakers last month from Counting Butterflies, Child & Family Wellness - both Michelle Brans, Founder and Clinical Director, and Jennifer Lynne Walker, MSW, RSW. They shared a fascinating case study that related to the types of issues and challenges they see in their practice. They shared how they assist the childrens, teens and families they support, which led to a fruitful discussion of how mindfulness helps us in general. They also led us through some mindfulness practices that we can use for ourselves as well as with our own clients or family members. Thanks you Michelle and Jen!

This month we will be starting with a 15 or 20 minute silent meditation since we know that every minute 'on the cushion', so to speak, grows and deepens our own personal mindfulness skills. We would like to serve as a 'sangha' for one another so that we can support our personal mindfulness practices, which is not easy in this busy, fast-paced society in which we live. After a short check in, we will be watching a famous mindfulness TedTalk by Dr. Shauna Shapiro called What We Practice Grows Stronger. She touches upon how the neuroplasticity of repeated experiences changes our brains. We can actually sculpt and strengthen our synaptic connections based on repeated practice (harnessing and focusing our attention in a very particular way). For example in the famous study of London taxi drivers: the visual spatial mapping part of the brain is bigger, stronger. They’ve been practicing navigating the 25,000 streets of London all day long. When the brain scientists look at the brains of meditators, the areas related to attention, learning, and compassion grow bigger and stronger. It’s a process that is called cortical thickening: the growth of new neurons in response to repeated practice. What we practice grows stronger. She focuses on the importance of practicing the skill of letting go of harsh self-judgment in order to more effectively make changes in our lives, thereby healing and growing in skills, strength and wisdom.

For those of you who are new to the Mindfulness Halton/Peel Professionals' Community, these meetings are for members only, however you are welcome to come to check us out at no cost if it's your first visit. Otherwise, members pay an annual fee of $25 which covers the costs of the room rentals, small thank you gifts for the guest speakers and other nominal costs. We have a log of when people last paid their dues, just in case you're wondering whether it's time. We are a non-profit organization, volunteer-run and are a chapter under Mindfulness Ontario. Mindfulness Halton/Peel is not a training program for the public but is a group of professionals who are dedicated to bringing together like-minded professionals who practice Mindful Living both personally and professionally in some capacity. We meditate together, share relevant resources and support one another's intentions to continue to deepen our mindfulness practices and bring mindfulness into the community in a formal way. We are always open to your fresh, new ideas for our community as well!

Hope to see you there!

Warm Regards,
Mindfulness Halton/Peel Professionals Steering Committee
