About this Event

MISHA BOWER

A co-founder of Toronto-based band Bruce Peninsula and an accomplished vocal guest with Daniel Romano, The Weather Station, City and Colour, Timber Timbre and Snowblink, Misha now emerges as a singer-songwriter with her debut album, Trying to Have it All. Misha’s last solo effort was a collection of short stories titled Music for Uninvited Guests (Cringles, 2012). On Trying to Have it All, she tells new stories in song, each track delineating a character in a crucial moment of disclosure. Defiant, playful, reflective, radically honest—each character is accompanied by an arrangement that opens up like a secret inner door. With a full band, soaring strings, intimate guitar and piano and impassioned vocals, Trying to Have it All is a journey through different takes on the art of coping.

‘On each of Trying to Have It All’s nine vivid tracks, Bower shares stories about love, loneliness and the sharp tendrils of regrets… Bower and her supporting cast craft densely emotional stories that linger long after you put this collection back on the shelf.’ –Laura Stanley, Exclaim!

JENNY BERKEL

Berkel's writing is at once gentle and hard-hitting. Her rich voice ornaments her poetry with melodies that soar high before spilling back down again. Berkel’s recent sophomore album, Pale Moon Kid, was recorded with producer Daniel Romano and released across Canada in April 2016 (Pheromone Recordings) and across Europe in October 2016 (Popup Records). Reviewers praised the album for its poetry, emotive storytelling, and dream-like ability to mesmerize listeners.

“A smouldering sound to behold...acutely poetic.” - Exclaim!

"In the same vein as Leonard Cohen and Sandy Denny, she has created a collection of folk songs that are sometimes brittle, at other times pleasantly buzzing, but always sounding unmistakably like Jenny Berkel.” - Rolling Stone Germany
