Dear Neighbour:

I thank many of you for your notes and words of support following what was a difficult decision to postpone our May 1st townhall at St. James Community Square. I have some thanks, and some good news, to share.

First, the thanks. Your words of encouragement and appreciation to my staff, and one of our guest speakers Dr. Tom Davidoff, are greatly appreciated. These people were subject to a level of personal attack that was unacceptable and vitriolic both in the lead up to the event and following the decision to postpone the event. Your support really made a difference. Thank you.

In happy news, if you worried that we might not be able to continue to hold open events where we discuss important issues in our community, fear not. We have rescheduled our townhall at a larger venue, we’re doing the necessary organizing to ensure it is a safe and welcoming event, and we’re pressing on full speed ahead.

We have set “Housing Townhall 2.0” for the evening of June 4th at the Hellenic Community Hall at 4500 Arbutus Street, 6:30PM. Our constituents will be prioritized in seating and out-of-constituency attendees may be waitlisted. It’s your chance to hear about government’s progress to date, provide feedback about what you’re seeing in the community, ask questions about policy, and make suggestions about where we should be going.

We’re inviting experts to provide insights on money laundering, the budget as it relates to housing initiatives, and changes to the law around housing. There will be an extended open mic for community member questions and comments, and I’ll be providing a full update of what I’ve been working on in relation to our community’s priorities.

We’re asking all attendees to work with us to ensure a tone of civility and mutual respect given heightened tensions on sensitive issues like the school tax, foreign and domestic speculation, money laundering, pre-sale condo flipping, homelessness, and rental housing shortages that will be discussed that evening. Thank you in advance for helping us prove that we can hold open, large-scale meetings on difficult topics to advance community conversations and understanding.

An important note: if you are a resident of Vancouver Pt. Grey who is particularly interested in the school tax as an issue, I will be attending the West Point Grey Residents’ Association meeting on May 27, Jericho Hill Gym 4196 W. 4th Ave, 2PM to present and take questions on that issue alone. The school tax will be discussed – but not exclusively – at our Housing Townhall 2.0 meeting.

Because of a large turnout expected for Housing Townhall 2.0, we really need extra volunteer help that evening. If you can assist, please e-mail dulcy.anderson@leg.bc.ca with the subject line “Town Hall Volunteer”.

I look forward to updating you on my work, and the government’s work, and to seeing you soon. Thank you again for your continuing support for our efforts to be available for and open to our community.

Yours truly,

David Eby, MLA
