MLK Day of Service Litter Cleanup
Event Information
About this Event
Observed each year on the third Monday in January, Martin Luther King Day is the only federal holiday designated as a national day of service to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities.
To stay safe and promote social-distancing, we are focusing this community cleanup inward towards our own neighborhoods! Have you noticed any areas or roads near your home that need a pick-me-up? Please join us in honoring the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr by joining the virtual MLK Day of Service Litter Cleanup.
Invite your neighbors, friends, sports teams, or group and practice social distancing as you beautify Greenville County.
All participants must sign the Volunteer Safety Guidelines, then email the signed copy to Litter Ends Here's Summer Gagnon at sgagnon@greenvillecounty.org. Include the number of volunteers in your group and what area/road you plan on picking up.
Trashbags, gloves, vests, and pickup grabbers are provided for free after signup.
On Monday, January 18th, spend a few hours beautifying your area/road in your neighborhood! We’ll make it a breeze to dispose of your litter, by picking up your trash bags full of the loose litter you have collected.
After Cleanup is Complete
It is very important to report your cleanup efforts so we can get the bags off the road as quickly as possible.
Reporting is easy, the group leader or designee will send an email to sgagnon@greenvillecounty.org with the following information:
Group name/members:
Road/area cleaned:
Number of Volunteers:
Number of bags collected:
Number of Hours:
After your cleanup, we will send the crews out to collect the bags. Remember to place bags in visible locations so they are easy to spot for our crews.
Flexible Dates
If you can't do a cleanup on Monday, January 18th but would still like to participate, you and your group can do your pickup the weekend before MLK Day (January 16th & January 17th).
COID-19 Guidelines
We ask that you practice all the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control's guidelines to keep yourself and others safe.
Volunteer Safety Guidelines
Volunteer groups must follow very strict safety guidelines. Please review the following safety procedures with your group before the litter pickup. Everyone in your group is required to sign the volunteer safety guidelines and turn it into the Greenville County Litter Prevention Coordinator prior to the cleanup.
By participating in a litter pick up, the volunteer(s) agree to follow Greenville County safety guidelines and instructions and agree to NOT hold Greenville County, Greenville County Municipalities, the Greenville County Litter Prevention Coordinator or his/her sponsor(s) responsible for any injuries they may suffer or damages they may cause or suffer, as a result of participation in the litter pick up.
- Group leaders shall review the safety guidelines with the group members prior to each cleanup.
- Every group should have a first aid kit, water, and cell phone. Your group is responsible for these items.
- Take frequent drinks of water and frequent breaks and take steps to prevent sunburn.
- Don’t try to handle hazardous litter, such as car batteries, discarded syringes, etc.
- Be very careful handling broken glass. Remind participants not to step or kneel in areas where there might be hidden broken glass.
- Be alert and ready to react to traffic.
- Everyone participating in the litter pick up must be wearing a safety vest at all times.
- Work together as a group and walk facing oncoming traffic. Work on one side of the road at a time.
- Do not engage in horseplay. Demonstrations are not allowed.
- Watch out for bees, wasps, fire ants, snakes, poisonous plants, and other potential natural hazards (especially if some individuals have allergies). Always look before stepping.
- Alcoholic beverages are prohibited on a litter pickup. Intoxicated participants should be taken home and should not participate.
- If youth groups are involved in the cleanup, adult supervision is required at all times.
- Do not bring small children to a cleanup.
- Do not wear music headphones, as they interfere with hearing traffic.
- Do not wear hats that could obscure your vision and keep you from seeing an approaching hazard.
- Do not try to compress trash into the bags, as sharp objects could cause injuries.
- Do not bring knives, machetes, or other such tools that could cause accidental injuries.
- Volunteers that are under the care of a physician and have been prescribed medication that alters normal reactions should stay home until they are better equipped to handle a litter pick-up.
