Description

Traffic mirror

In 1993, Martin Kippenberger named an abandoned slaughterhouse the Museum of Modern Art Syros. Together with Michel Würthle and others, Kippenberger hosted intimate social gatherings and art events at the MOMAS site. Kippenberger’s friend, Maria Papadimitriou, was entrusted with the realization of MOMAS and, after Kippenberger’s death, was involved in the attempt to establish the site as as a museum --instead, the EU developed it as a wastewater treatment facility (Viologikos Katharismos). In the early 2000s, Mario Garcia Torres and others reactivated the site as an exhibition space, but somehow the original concept still remained unavailable, trapped in the materiality of the building.
As tourists to this area, we were disappointed to learn we couldn't visit MOMAS -- not as it was for Kippenberger. But, since MOMAS was more of a concept than a place, it was possible to temporarily re-locate the site, virtually, in Google maps. This meant not giving the concept a new body, but also, not entombing it within the museumified confines of its old body. We also gave it a website. After matching angles to landscapes, comparing photos to google earth and google maps street view, it was discovered that the site of a Christopher Wool “MOMAS” signpost was now a traffic mirror. For convenience, the geotag marker of the traffic mirror was to be the new site of MOMAS-- at least for our visit. The many liberties that we have been taking with respect to the Momas name and history all seem consistent with -- and are meant as an homage to -- Kippenberger’s practice. The traffic mirror reflects the wastewater treatment facility. MOMAS as a Geotag is now accessible, re-opened by tourists, but not entirely there.
