Description

CoderDojo is a volunteer-run mentorship program for kids and young people to improve their computing skills, meet peers with similar interests, and work with professionals who can answer questions and help inspire ideas.

At CoderDojo Toronto, we aim to break down barriers to access to computer literacy by working with community organizations, challenging social and economic stereotypes, and empowering youth to shape their world through code.

TICKET OPTIONS

  • Drop-In Lab: bring your own ideas, or use our kid-friendly resources. We have projects suitable for all skill levels. Students work at their own pace with support from our team of volunteers who can answer any questions.

Available activities for our drop-in sessions are:

    • Scratch - creating interactive stories or games (beginner, ages 6-10, minimal typing)

    • Web Development - make your own website or application (intermediate, ages 10+, typing skills required)

    • Python - learn to program games and apps in Python (intermediate, ages 10+, typing skills required)

    • Other - tell us what you’d like to learn! Let one of our mentors know what you have in mind, and they can assist you with finding resources

  • Monthly Workshop: every month, there is a new instructor led workshop. Content and skill level will vary month-to-month.

SPECIAL MARCH WORKSHOP

Coding Language: Arduino IDE (Python)

Skill Level: Intermediate. Typing skills required. Great for learners 10+ with some code experience who are looking for a new challenge.

Description: We are celebrating "Water A Flower Day"! Help build and program a plant watering system powered by an Arduino, a small, programmable circuit board. Preview the workshop project here.

IMPORTANT INFO BEFORE SIGNING UP

  • Pick a ticket type. You can sign up for our drop-in lab OR our rotating monthly workshop

  • Kids coding drop-in lab, ages 6 - 17 only

  • Bring Your Own Laptop

  • All skill levels welcome

  • Adult accompaniment required at all times

  • Bring a snack, but remember that we are a peanut-free environment

As always, CoderDojo is free to attend. This is possible because of our team of volunteers, and generous community donations. Please consider supporting our work to bring computing skills to kids across the GTA and beyond by making a donation (see us at the event for details).

FOR NEW ATTENDEES

When you arrive:

  • Let a CoderDojo event organizer or mentor know if it's your first event. We’re always happy to see new faces at the dojo!

  • Grab a name tag

  • Set up your computer

  • Pick a project. One of our mentors can help get you started on a learning resource that fits your skill level and interests. Or, if you are already familiar with programming and would like to bring your own project or idea to work on, we would love to help make your idea a reality!

  • While working, if you get stuck or need help, our mentors are always there to offer assistance. Raise a hand or use one of our question clothespins, and a mentor will come by to assist you.
