Event description

Description

This Symposium will focus on women's health and autonomic function after spinal cord injury (SCI), with particular emphasis on motherhood (fertility, pregnancy, lactation, breastfeeding). As this topic is poorly understood, this Symposium will examine the current understanding of women's health issues related to SCI.

Autonomic disturbances, such as life-threatening fluctuations in blood pressure (i.e. autonomic dysreflexia), are amongst the most common debilitating complications in individuals with SCI. This remains true for women who pursue motherhood, as autonomic disturbances can create unique challenges to pregnancy, lactation and breastfeeding. This event will gather international experts in various disciplines of medicine, clinical science and the community to provide a truly multidisciplinary platform for participants to exchange ideas and learn from each other. Community participants, clinicians, scientists and trainees will have the opportunity to interact and share knowledge during this symposium. Talks will also address the latest advances in research and management of autonomic dysfunction and health issues for women with SCI, particularly for prospective or current mothers.
