Description

Trainer: Cristine Urquhart, MSW, RSW, co-founder of Change Talk Associates, offers training and coaching across Canada in evidence-based communication practices to increase engagement and build motivation for health and related change. Cristine is a member of the International Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers, an instructor with UBC Continuing Studies and a published author.


Overview: Motivational Interviewing (MI), an evidence-based communication style, draws out individual reasons for change, decreases discord, builds readiness, and strengthens commitment to change. MI improves engagement, retention and treatment outcomes.

Learning Objectives: This 2 day knowledge and skills-based workshop will introduce learners to an MI style of communication and highlight some beginning skills and strategies to support engagement and guide towards positive health and related changes, tailored to their context. Learners will:

  • Experience how communication style influences motivation
  • Distinguish the language of change and the Spirit of MI
  • Identify the 4 processes of an MI conversation
  • Practise core skills and strategies within each process to enhance engagement and reduce discord, find the focus and guide change across a range topics with caregivers
  • Reflect on how to begin integrating MI into their conversation with caregivers

When: April 19th & 20th, 2018, 9:00 am – 4:00 pm (Doors open at 8:30am)
