Facilitators: Dr Jennifer Irwin and Dr Don Morrow

This full-day interactive workshop offers participants the opportunity to learn and practice tools for effective health-related behaviour change. This highly interactive workshop focuses on the acquisition of practical tools that can be used when working with clients/patients who want to manage a health-related problem and/or promote a health-related goal. A variety of break-out sessions offer participants the opportunity to practice working with these tools in pairs while receiving feedback/assistance from skilled facilitators. Participants will learn using real issues relevant to their lives – with complete choice of what they choose to share – and then work on integrating those skills into their professional practice. Participants will leave the workshop with additional skills to add to their professional "tool boxes", which can help them to assist clients in making positive health behavior change. Some of the specific tools/skills taught and practiced include: moving status talk to change talk; learning how to ask permission in order to engage with clients; helping to anchor behaviour change goals to clients' personal values; dropping assumptions in service of helping the client change behaviours; learning to ask powerful questions; moving with and through apparent client resistance; understanding and gauging client readiness; using ‘tangible’ agreements for helping to get clients motivated to following through on their desired behaviours; and helping people change their perspective in service of making better choices for themselves. These skills are taught such that health practitioners can apply them immediately within the context of their professional practices. Finally, the application of this model of MI to reduce practitioner burn-out is also discussed and explored. Each participant will receive a workshop folder with additional resources as well as a course completion certificate.
