A two-day workshop providing an introduction to motivational interviewing to health and social services professionals and students.

About this Event

This skills-based workshop will provide:

  • An introduction to motivational interviewing and its underlying theories
  • In-depth instruction in person-centred counselling skills
  • Practice in listening for, and facilitating discussion about change
  • Strategies for supporting change
  • Examples will be drawn from a range of practice areas including substance use, housing and homelessness, hoarding, and health promotion (i.e. healthy eating, disease management, and exercise participation)
  • Practice and feedback in using the strategies learned in the workshop

This introductory course is best suited to health professionals and social service professionals and students who support individuals who are in the process of making changes in their lives, or who may be contemplating change. A Motivational Interviewing Level I certificate will be provided on completion of this workshop.

Who is this workshop suitable for?

This course is suited to individuals working in the health or social service sectors, and students enrolled in health care or social services related programs.

About the Facilitator:

Carrie Anne Marshall is an Assistant Professor at Western University and occupational therapist whose teaching and research focuses on mental health, poverty, and homelessness. She has worked for several years in the housing and homelessness sector, assertive community treatment, crisis, and early intervention in psychosis. She has advanced level training in motivational interviewing, and is frequently asked to provide this training in universities, and in health care and social service settings.
