Event description

Description

Every four years, grown-up Torontonians get to vote for the kind of city they’d like to live in. Small Print Toronto, East End Arts and The Children’s Book Bank are joining forces to give citizens aged 6-12 a chance to not only register their civic priorities but bring them to life at Mouse City Votes!, a special election-themed edition of the popular model city-building workshop.

There’ll be a voting booth with ballots that list perennial urban priorities such as arts and culture, housing transit, parks and so forth. When they arrive, young citizens can rank these real-life civic priorities in order of how they might improve life in the make-believe, mini metropolis, Mouse City. The result of this vote will shape the direction of the model-city building workshop.

Young urban planners can construct houses, stores and other urban landmarks out of recycled materials and craft supplies. Small Print Toronto’s Urban Planning Education Directors, Alexander Furneaux and Marcia Garnes, will guide kids through the steps of finding the most appropriate spot for their creations on a giant city grid, in terms of the ongoing development and flow of Mouse City as a whole.

To ensure that Mouse City’s election is not hijacked by fat cats, at the end kids will also be invited to act as media observers. Aspiring reporters can use special worksheets to write and draw mini-articles for the newspaper of record, The Mouse City Times. Copies of The Mouse City Times will be distributed after the event at The Children’s Book Bank and posted on the Small Print Toronto website. .

Space is limited. Mouse City events are always popular. So, be sure to sign up early!

ADVANCE POLL: To get public input outside of the workshop, The Children’s Book Bank (350 Berkley St, Toronto) will host an Advance Poll on Saturday, October 13, from 10am-5pm. Young citizens who can't attend the model city building workshop are invited to fill out a ballot and create a piece for The Mouse City Times.

FAQs - Frequently Asked Questions:

Do I need to book a ticket for a parent or sibling, who is attending but not participating?

No, we only ask that you reserve a spot for urban planners aged 8-12, who will be actively taking part in the workshop.

Why do you ask for the ages of the kids?

Knowing the overall age-range of participants ahead of time helps us focus our programming accordingly.

Are you a licensed child care centre?

No. Small Print Toronto is a registered non-profit organization, staffed entirely by volunteers. Our humble resources are directed towards providing FREE literary programs to children across the GTA.

Why does a guardian have to be on site, during the event?

While children are guided by our team, littles sometimes need assistance with the activity or to be accompanied to the bathroom.

We also rely on guardians to help maintain our tenants of Safety, Unity, Respect and Fun. (SURF).

All of our programs are designed for parents to enjoy WITH their children. We hope they spark conversations between parents and their children that keep going after an event has finished. We choose authors/artists whose work is just as interesting for adults as children.

Can a group of kids have one guardian?

Absolutely, It is common for a parent to bring their child and their child’s friends to our events (with the friends’ parents’ permission, of course).

What Snacks will you be serving? Is it a proper catered lunch?

We will serve a healthy snack of fruit, cheese and granola bars at the mid-point of the session, around noon, to boost the blood sugar levels of young builders. It's a snack break, not a proper lunch. If your child(ren) has dietary restrictions, or if they require a more substantial mid-day meal, we ask that you provide it.
