Description

Welcome to registration for MUN WHO 2019!

Please read below for event details:

Registration is now open to delegates for the 2019 MUN World Health Organization (MUN WHO) Simulation Conference! Our conference brings together students from across Newfoundland and Labrador who share a passion for global affairs and health. We hope that you can join us from March 8th-10th at the Memorial University Faculty of Medicine for an opportunity to discuss global health challenges and play a proactive role in shaping global health policy.

MUN WHO welcomes all students from any faculty, program, or major and from any university or college to attend our conference. Since global health policy-making is an interdisciplinary effort, we are proud to welcome students from a variety of academic backgrounds!

The 3-day conference (in the style of a Model UN) will include several influential speakers, exciting debates, discussions, and networking opportunities!

At this WHO simulation, delegates assume the role of a country’s ambassador to the WHO and work with their peers to develop resolution papers that address a given global health theme. Through this, the MUN WHO conference offers participants the opportunity to step out into the world as a citizen of a global village while discussing health issues in a political, social and economic context.

This year, our conference theme is "Women's and Maternal Health". By giving students this unique opportunity to engage in health issues, we hope to facilitate knowledge and spark discussion about an extremely important topic worldwide.

The main goals of this conference are to:

-Raise student awareness about challenges in global health
-Provide a means for students to play a proactive role in developing global health policy
-Acquaint students with the WHO and its role
-Facilitate the development of interprofessional relations between students from multidisciplinary fields and healthcare experts
-Expose students to a deeper understanding of the social determinants of health

Early-bird registration ($20) is available for the first 30 conference seats. Following this, standard registration ($30) will be open until February 18th.

Do I need prior debate experience?

No prior debating experience is required. The conference is designed in a way that welcome new debaters.

What is a position paper?

Your position paper is a tool used to communicate your knowledge about the country you are representing at the MUN WHO conference. Although brief in nature, awards are typically given out at our conference for best paper. In terms of content, a position paper should be one to one-and-a-half pages in length, and include a brief introduction of your countries healthcare system and some relevant issues that could be addressed. A good position paper will not only convey health and demographic information but also make proposals to address those aforementioned issues.

Is the position paper mandatory to attend the conference?

Yes. The position paper must be completed and submitted to the Secretariat by a date closer to the conference.

What research will I need to do before attending the conference?

Before the conference begins, each participant will prepare a position paper for their assigned country. Once a country is assigned to a participant, they will receive some guiding resources which will serve as a starting point for their research of facts and details pertaining to their specific country. A sample paper will be available to provide direction to your pre-conference research and highlight some of the information you should be looking for, which may include facts, policies, health issues faced by the country, etc. Do not let the research component intimidate you, as it is intended to help you prepare to be a knowledgeable debater during the conference! Beyond the research needed for the position paper, all guidance needed for the debate portion of the conference will be provided.

What is included in the conference fee?

Conference fees include lunch on Saturday, along with coffee, tea and snacks in the morning and afternoon on Saturday and Sunday. Delegates will receive a 2019 MUN WHO conference t-shirt and 3 days filled with learning, debate and fun!

What if I can attend some, but not all, of the conference?

We try to accommodate attendees as best as possible. Partial attendance will be addressed on a case by case basis, and such accommodations must be communicated before the conference begins. Please email us at munmodelwho@gmail.com with your inquiry.
