Event description

Description

The Province recently released proposed amendments to the Growth Plan and related land use plans for the Greater Golden Horseshoe, as well as the Climate Change Action Plan (CCAP). Given that these plans chart a course towards 2041 (in the case of the Growth Plan) and 2050 (in the case of the CCAP) policy objectives, this emerging policy framework connecting land use decisions to climate action will have significant implications for municipal and other local government agencies (i.e Conservation Authorities) over the long term.

Please join the Ontario Climate Consortium (OCC) and the Clean Air Partnership (CAP) for a workshop that seeks to address the significant questions related to this emerging land use and climate policy framework:

  • What is the nature and scope of policy implications for local governments in the Greater Golden Horseshoe?

  • To what extent is there policy alignment between the proposed Growth Plan (and related plans) and the Province's emerging climate action agenda?

  • Are these plans are consistent with the level of ambition required to meet ambitious provincial, national and global GHG reduction targets while contributing to the resilience-building efforts required for us to adapt to a rapidly changing climate?

The Province is seeking feedback on proposed amendments to the Growth Plan and related plans between now and the end of September. Municipal governments are in the midst of preparing comments, and are interested in a forum to build understanding and awareness of implications from a climate change perspective.

This workshop looks to convene municipal policy practitioners, as well as expertise from other levels of government, academia, civil society and the private sector, to discuss proposed amendments to the land use planning framework in relation to the Province's climate change action agenda (both with respect to mitigation and adaptation). It will feature a series of presentations to set the context, followed by facilitated breakout discussion groups around select topics, finishing with a report back to the entire audience and discussion of next steps.
