Event description

Description

Join naturalist and author Tom Cervenka for a mushroom foraging walk in Robert's Creek. The area has an abundance of wild edible mushooms that are not typically seen in Vancouver, including highly-coveted pine mushrooms, chanterelles, gypsy mushrooms, and many others. This event is an opportunity to gain hands-on experience with identifying and gathering these gorgeous, wild edible mushrooms in an area where mushroom picking is permitted, before the mushroom season ends. Be prepared to walk both on- and off-trail, through somewhat hilly, forested areas, over/around fallen logs and in mossy areas. Space is limited to12 people.

The group will be meeting at 1:00 pm at the Gumboot Cafe (not the Gumboot restaurant next door) in Robert's creek, and from there heading to a backwoods trail to collect mushrooms until 4:30 pm. Parking at the trail head is about a 10 minute drive away from the Gumboot cafe.

For those travelling from Vancouver, a ferry departs from Horseshoe Bay at 11:55 am heading for the Langdale ferry terminal in Gibsons, arriving at 12:35 pm. From Gibsons it is a 20 minute drive to the Gumboot Cafe in Robert's Creek. Returning to Vancouver, the ferries depart at 3:15 pm, 5:25 pm and 6:40 pm, however it is advisable to arrive at the terminal an hour earlier. For ferry discounts of $10 per vehicle and $3 per passenger, see the BC Ferries Experience Card. Ferry reservation is strongly recommended. Ferries are filling fast, so book soon!

A roundtrip carpool from Vancouver in a seven-passenger minivan is available for $25, including cost of ferry and gas. Carpool meeting point is the Starbucks at Davie and Seymour at 10:00 am. If you are interested in car pooling, please advise co-organizer Karen Sato (karen_sato@yahoo.com). Additional carpools welcome.

What to bring and not bring: No pets, no smoking, no small children. Dress for the weather, this event will not be cancelled for rain. Also recommended: 'Trailforks' mobile app.

Copies of "Wild Edible Mushrooms of British Columbia, third Edition" will be available for $20, or purchase from Amazon.ca
