Event description

Description

This course will help you identify edible and poisonous mushrooms in the wild. You'll also learn basic concepts and terminology. You should leave this course with a good idea of the major types of mushrooms and how to tell them apart.

We’ll begin our session at our market with mushroom safety and mushroom identification by noting key characteristics of these amazing organisms. Next we head out on a fieldtrip to the Chilliwack Lake area to search for mushrooms in the wild. Note that this trip is moderately strenuous. Our course will conclude back at our market for specimen identification and mushroom tasting.

Our Instructor for the day is Thom O’Dell, Ph.D. Dr. O’Dell has over thirty five years of experience collecting, studying, growing and eating mushrooms. He received a Ph.D. in Botany and Plant Pathology from Oregon State University. Currently Thom is consulting biologist for Nature Tech Nursery in Langley, BC, where he is developing micropropagation methods for native and cultivated plants.

Recommended reading: All That the Rain Promises, David Arora.

Required Equipment: pocket knife, collecting basket (or pail), aluminum foil or waxed paper (for wrapping specimens).

Cost is $80.
