Event description
Three classic silent films for your viewing pleasure; three original, improvised piano scores

About this Event

Bruce Vogt is an internationally acclaimed concert pianist who will appear in Chelsea, not only to show off our glorious grand piano, but to delight our audience with another of his passions -- improvising accompaniments to great films of the silent era. He has played for and lectured about films by Chaplin, Keaton, Lloyd, Griffith, Murnau and others.

Bruce’s goals in playing for these classic silent films is to show their greatness, and to create a love and understanding of the form through his playing and his narrative. And, something he almost always accomplishes, to see audiences leave as permanent fans of silent film.

Bruce will undoubtedly see his Chelsea audience leave the venue as permanent fans of his virtuoso performance and improvisational skills. And, we hope, as fans of what a magnificent instrument can bring to the Mill Road concert space.

Bruce Vogt was born in Southern Ontario, but for the past 40 years has lived in Victoria, BC, where he teaches piano at the University of Victoria. As a soloist, he performs in concerts across Canada, as well as touring yearly throughout Europe and Asia. His repertoire encompasses music from the sixteenth century to the present. In addition to having a special affinity for the music of Franz Liszt, he has both performed on period instruments and commissioned and premiered a number of new works.

"RARE GRANDEUR . . . I have never heard [Liszt's] Norma Fantasy played with such consummate largesse . . . I was mesmerized by Vogt's sheer control. In Liszt's Dante Sonata the structure of the work was never exposed and the final triumph of the piece rang from the piano with spine chilling inevitability."

The Times, London, UK

" . . .THOUGHTFUL AND THOUGHT-PROVOKING. [Vogt’s] sophisticated yet ungimmicky presentation left the dry didacticism of lecture-recitals in the dust."

The Globe and Mail, Toronto, Canada
