Music Declares Emergency is a group of artists, music industry professionals and organisations that stand together to declare a climate and ecological emergency and call for an immediate governmental response to protect all life on Earth. We believe in the power of music to promote the cultural change needed to create a better future.
Launched in the UK in July 2019 and spearheaded by Fay Milton from the UK band Savages, over 2000 bands and musicians have now signed up to Music Declares Emergency’s pledge to revitalise how the music industry tackles climate disaster, from The 1975 and Radiohead, to Robyn, Billie Eilish, Massive Attack and more.
Music Declares groups have been launched in Germany, France, Switzerland and Chile and we are now launching Music Declares Emergency Canada. Some of the Canadian artists who are on board include Tegan & Sara, Dan Mangan, Kevin Drew (Broken Social Scene), Melissa McLelland (Whitehorse) The Weather Station, Amy Millan (Stars), Sarah Harmer, Amy Cole (Rural Alberta Advantage), Good Lovelies, Charles Spearin (Do Make Say Think & Broken Social Scene), Katie Munshaw (Dizzy), Caribou, Hannah Georgas, Ron Hawkins (Lowest of the Low), Luna Li and Moscow Apartment. Over 200 Canadians have already signed on.
This virtual meeting and discussion will be an opportunity for Music Declares Supporters and people who are interested in finding out more to hear from founder Fay Milton. Fay will be joined by Laurence Lafond-Beaulne from SOFT FABRIC / Half of Milk&Bone / Co-founder of ACT movement, Brighid Fry (Moscow Apartment & Climate Live Canada), Catherine Abreu (Climate Action Network) and Caroline Brooks (Good Lovelies & Music Declares Emergency Canada) to discuss what Climate-Music organizing in Canada could look like. The event will be facilitated by musician and activist Liv Cazzola (The Lifers, Tragedy Ann) .
This will be an opportunity to find out more and explore ways the music industry in Canada can transform at this time of crisis to rebuild with sustainability and addressing the climate emergency at the centre of how we move forward.
We acknowledge that this virtual event will be hosted from Toronto, Tkaronto/Treaty 13 which is the traditional territory of the Mississaugas of the Anishnabe, the Haudenosaunee Confederacy and the Wendat. This land is covered by the Dish With One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant, which was an agreement between the Haudenosaunee and Anishinaabek to share and care for the resources around the Great Lakes. We encourage participants to share the traditional territory they are joining in from.
