About this Event

Through Music Matters, in partnership with S.A.C. and CMC, Kathryn Waugh is proud to present a series of four workshops to help songwriters and performers navigate the Music Industry. Copyright Basics, Rights and Royalties, Music for Productions and Music Publishing for Songwriters each aim to give insight to the subject so that artists can arm themselves with the knowledge to succeed.

For over 20 years, Kathryn Waugh, owner of Music Matters, has provided clients, from major corporations and worldwide productions to independent performers and songwriters, with in-depth advice on rights registration, royalty distribution and licensing. Kathryn has also developed and taught post-secondary courses for some of the most prominent music business schools in the GTA. She is passionate about sharing her knowledge of the music industry and helping artists achieve their dreams.

Workshop #1: COPYRIGHT BASICS (for S.A.C. and CMC members)

Date: Thursday Feb. 27

Location: Canadian Music Centre, 20 St. Joseph Street, Toronto and ONLINE

The Music Matters Copyright Basics Workshop aims to teach songwriters, performers, and rights holders about Canadian and international copyright as it pertains to music. We will look at what it means to have intellectual property and how your copyright is protected in a global market.

PART ONE:

- Introduction

- Understanding copyright basics such a term (composition vs. recording) and how to register a work

- Explain the moral and economic rights of songwriters

PART TWO:

- Fair Use and Public Domain

- International copyright and how it affects Canadian songwriters

- Question period

Workshop #2: MUSIC FOR PRODUCTIONS (for S.A.C. and CMC members)

Date: Thursday March 19

Location: Canadian Music Centre, 20 St. Joseph Street, Toronto and ONLINE

Time: 1:00pm-2:30pm EST

The Music Matters Music for Productions Workshop aims to teach songwriters, performers, and rights holders all about music for film, television, games and commercials. We will explore the differences in working in each medium and what that means for your career

PART ONE:

- Introduction

- Understand the difference between composing for a project and licensing your music

- Explain what you should be aware of when quoting on a project (use of composition, retaining your rights)

PART TWO:

- Working with music supervisors and licensing agents

- How to get your work in productions

PART THREE:

- Question period

Workshop #3: MUSIC PUBLISHING FOR SONGWRITERS (for ECMA conference passholders only)

Date: Friday May 1st

Location: St. John's, NL during the East Coast Music Week Conference

Time: TBD

The Music Matters Music Publishing for Songwriters Workshop aims to teach songwriters what music publishers do and when/why you might need one.

PART ONE:

- Introduction

- Understanding what a music publisher does – copyright, royalties, licensing and song development

- Explore why a songwriter might want to sign a publishing deal

PART TWO:

- How to find a music publisher – demos and cold-submissions

- Networking and events – where to go and who to talk to (labels, managers, agents, etc.)

Workshop #4: RIGHTS AND ROYALTIES (for CMW conference passholders only)

Date: Friday May 22

Location: Sheraton Centre Hotel Downtown Toronto

Time: 11:00am-1:00pm

The Music Matters Rights and Royalties Workshop aims to teach songwriters, performers, and rights holders all about music royalties and the organizations that assist them. This seminar will breakdown which rights each party holds and what each organization is responsible for.

PART ONE:

- Introduction

- Understand the two different sides of the music industry (composition vs performing/recording)

- Explain why this is important in terms of rights and royalties management

PART TWO:

- Understand the objective of each organization, how each distributes royalties, and how to register

o CMRRA (mechanical rights)

o SOCAN (public performance rights)

o Re:Sound (neighbouring rights)

o Connect (neighbouring rights)

- Explain the difference between physical sales, downloads, streaming and which organization(s) is involved
