.WOMEN COMPOSERS ROCK MILL ROAD’s GRAND!

About this Event

A Trio of Women Perform Music Written by Women (and their

friends)

For centuries, societal constraints kept most women close to

home and hearth. Still, a few extremely gifted women were able

to break out, and write, publish, and perform in the classical

music world. Fanny Mendelssohn, Clara Schumann, Cecile

Chaminade, and Amy Beach were some of these extraordinary

musicians. They left us a rich legacy of masterpieces that are

enjoyed more and more today.

Sophie Bertrand (soprano), Anna Baksheeva (violin), and Katherine

Addleman (piano) present a selection of music by women

composers, past and present, along with compositions by some of

their intimate friends (of the male persuasion) including Chopin,

Brahms, and Felix Mendelssohn.

Sophie Bertrand received a Masters in Vocal Performance from

the University of Ottawa and has been performing and teaching

for over ten years. She studied with vocal coach Donald Sulzen in

Munich, Germany and sang in masterclasses with Edith Wiens,

Deen Larsen, Daniel Lichti and Daryl Edwards. She has performed

in numerous opera productions at the National Arts Centre,

including Louis Riel, Le Nozze di Figaro, Madama Butterfly,

Carmen, Cavalleria Rusticana, Pagliacci, Lucia di Lammermoor,

Turandot, and Manon.

Anna Baksheeva studied music in her native Vladivostok, Russia,

and at the Conservatory of St. Petersburg, before earning her B.

Music in violin performance at the University of Georgia and her

Masters at the University of Ottawa with Yehonatan Berick. She

performs frequently in the Ottawa area, working with many local

musicians, and as part of the group Duo Pleiades.

Katherine Addleman studied at the Quebec Conservatoire, McGill

University (B. Music in piano performance) and at Concordia

University in Montreal (graduate artist’s diploma), and also with

Bernard Rose in New York City. She performs often in the US

and Canada, and for many years has presented annual cycles of

lecture/concerts based on great composers. The talented Dr.

Addleman also holds a doctorate in microbiology.
