Event description
Join Patrick Boyer in a look back to this very place 100 years ago, and reflect on how far we've come, yet how much has remained the same.

About this event

An upcoming title in Patrick Boyer’s popular MODERN HISTORY OF MUSKOKA series is Muskokans Embrace the Roaring Twenties. At this year’s summer Chautauqua, Patrick will hit some 1920s highlights, based on his extensive research and deep knowledge of Muskoka and Muskokans.

This talk is an informal advance look at his work-in-progress, a pre-publication account of that transformative decade. Like the book itself, Patrick’s presentation will frame the Twenties with its bookend events – the Spanish Flu pandemic’s impact on Muskokans in 1919-20, and the Great Crash of 1929 when the disintegrating stock market kickstarted the Great Depression of the Thirties. In between, as he will trace, the “Roaring Twenties” included: the breakout awakening of the Canadian nation; the bold new arena of liberty for women; political realignments globally, nationally, and provincially; surging economic conditions; cultural clarity with emergence of the Art Deco movement, and with shorter hemlines and “flapper” dancing; the Prohibition Era’s promises and perils; major evolution in vacationland Muskoka – and Muskoka Chautauqua’s unique role in the centre of all this by refocusing national attention on Canadian literature.

Patrick Boyer is a Canadian journalist, lawyer, broadcaster, book publisher, university professor, parliamentarian, printer, outdoorsman and writer of 20+ books.
