About this event
Chaplaincy, especially Muslim Chaplaincy, has yet to gain popular awarness in the Canadian context. Very few Muslims know about chaplaincy or what chaplains do, and therefore are at a disadvantage to access such services or consider it as a career path.
The event will consists of three panel discussions and a keynote speaker session.
The panels will consist of discussions around:
- Chaplaincy and Spiritual Care: Muslim Chaplains Serving Across Sectors.
- Muslim Chaplaincy in the 21st Century: Challenges and Opportunities
- Women in Chaplaincy
- Third Space: Situating Chaplaincy in the Muslim Community
All are welcome to join!
We're excited to be hosting Dr. Ingrid Mattson, who will give the keynote address titled: Muslim Chaplaincy in the 21st Century: Opportunities and Challenges.
Our first panel will be an introduction to what is Muslim Chaplaincy and where do chaplains work. Speakers will get the opportunity to share their journey, what made them pursue chaplaincy as a calling and a career path, how chaplaincy affects the Muslim community and why they continue to do the work that they do.
We're honoured to have Sh. Habeeb Alli and Dr. Amira Ayad join us as panelists.
Our second panel will host a conversation on the experiences of female chaplains. Chaplaincy as opening a space for women leadership, and the importance of having female chaplains in Muslim spaces. Chaplaincy as meaning-making, and addressing questions of meaning, purpose and belonging. The role of chaplains, especially female chaplains, in creating safe space for victims of violence and trauma and assist them to belong and create meaning.
We are joined by Dr. Pamela McCaroll (Emmanuel College), Dr. Nazila Isgandrova (Emmanuel College) and Chaplain Selda Sezen (Wilfrid Laurier University).
The purpose of this panel discussion is to invite imams and religious leaders in the Muslim community to a conversation on the role of chaplains in the Muslim community and chaplains as providing a third space between home and mosque for people to seek spiritual care and guidance.
