Muslim Mental Health First Responder Certification Training

A 14 hour hands-on training designed to prepare chaplains and Islamic clergy

*Ideal for religious scholars ('ulamā & 'ālimāt), imāms and Islamic studies (maktab & madrasah) teachers*

Termed ‘First Responders’ to effectively understand and respond to psycho-social issues among North American Muslims, this 2-day course (Apr 21 Saturday 8:30am-4pm & Apr 22 Sunday 8:30am-4pm) will orient participants to basic empathic listening (preliminary counseling) to North American Muslim individuals, couples, and families.

The course will provide a framework for:

  • How to intervene during initial crisis

  • How to effectively interact and establish a therapeutic relationship

  • How to identify limitations and boundaries

  • How to understand mandated reporting and clergy rights

  • How to screen and identify for the possible presence of mental illness

  • How to refer to mental health professionals

This course will also lay out an Islamically integrated model of counseling. The sequence of topics will highlight practical treatment approaches within the model by integrating modern clinical psychology.

Additionally, there will be a module focused on marital counseling and issues related to marriage and Islamic law. This is an experiential course that will involve lecture, discussion, modeling and demonstrations of technique and role-play.


LAYOUT

  • Module 1: Introduction to Islamically integrative model and fundamentals of forming counseling relationship

  • Module 2: Clergy rights and responsibilities, mandated reporting, ethics and legal limitations, boundaries, roles, introduction to mental illness

  • Module 3: Screenings (substance use, domestic violence, suicidal clients, etc.), crisis response, mental status and Islamic law

  • Module 4: Pre-marital coaching, marital counseling, reconciliation, mediation, divorce and Islamic law


CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION

A certificate of completion will be awarded upon completion of this course to participating students.
