Event description

Description

You've heard that we live on unceded territories of the Musqueam people but how much do you know about their culture? Here's a unique opportunity to learn.

Take a tour through the land the Musqueam People have occupied for 4,000 years and learn the history of their people from community member Terry Point.

On this unique ecological experience, Terry will guide us on a tour of Musqueam Creek, Vancouver’s most important wild salmon stream at the mouth of the Fraser River.

Terry led the program to rehabilitate Musqueam Creek with thousands of volunteers. He provides a wealth of information from the initial daylighting of the creek to adding protective flood gates to the amazing Aquatic Rehabilitation Habitat program now employing many community members full time. Fish and wildlife have returned, and only indigenous plants grow along the banks.

You will learn about how the Musqueam people have used the stream and rainforest ecosystem for spiritual, physical, and mental well-being. You will learn a little about the plant life, why it is different from plants growing upstream and how the Musqueam people use some of the plants for medicine.

We will explore the significance of salmon and link the ecosystem back to traditional teaching through story and practice - pointing out significant archaeological sites and sharing information about historical events.

It is important to note that Musqueam Creek was also the first stream visited by a European explorer. As Simon Fraser’s canoe paddled up the north arm of the Fraser River and into the mouth of Musqueam Creek on July 2, 1808, the ancestors of today’s salmon were there, witnessing his arrival form the currents beneath his canoe.

After the tour, we will have the opportunity to explore the new state-of-the-art Cultural Education Resource Centre and the Museum Gallery space where many of their cultural treasures are held.

We will end by watching the film Musqueam Through Time, exploring the 4,000-year history of the Musqueam people.

Space is limited. Get your tickets early on Eventbrite to avoid disappointment.
