My City, My Neighbourhood: Participatory Mapping Workshop (Online)
Event Information
About this Event
As part of Planning Vancouver Together, we’re inviting all those who live, work and play in Vancouver to “map the city” by joining one of our fun mapping workshops. Sign up to help the City create ‘Complete Neighbourhoods’ for all – ensuring a strong network of unique, connected places across Vancouver with easy access to daily and weekly needs.
What Can You Expect?
You’ll be invited to create a digital map of places you use and love: favourite shops and cafes, cultural centres, parks, and any other spots that are important to you around the city. We’ll also be asking for input on your neighbourhood and invite you to pinpoint the things that make your part of Vancouver unique, and shape your experience of living there.
IMPORTANT: Each participant will work individually, with the support of the facilitator. Workshops run for 90+ minutes and feature a series of guided mapping exercises using the City’s SHAPE YOUR CITY platform. The event will be broadcast using CISCO WEBEX. Registration for both Shape Your City and Webex are free (see “Technology Requirements” below). You are strongly encouraged to download/register for these in advance.
Who is this for?
The workshop is free and open to anyone interested in the future of the city and its neighbourhoods!
What Are Complete Neighbourhoods … and Why Are They Important?
A Complete Neighbourhood has all of the essential parts of your life in the city within close proximity to one another, and supports the needs of all residents, regardless of income, culture, background or abilities. This includes diverse housing options, a mix of shops and services, alongside childcare facilities, libraries, galleries and recreation centres – linked by lively pathways, parks and plazas.
Creating “Complete, Connected, and Culturally Vibrant Neighbourhoods” is a key goal of the City’s Vancouver Plan. Currently under development, this plan is an opportunity to strengthen Vancouver’s neighbourhoods so they can better meet the needs of all residents, deliver missing elements, and effectively respond to future challenges.

Privacy
Protecting your privacy
- To ensure that we are using online meeting technology in a privacy-conscious way, we are following best practices for this online event series:
- We will only circulate the meeting link to those who are registered for the event
- We will ask that participants use their first and last name as their display name on the event, so we can check incoming participants against the event registration list
- To protect your own privacy we suggest that:
- You use a unique email address to log into both the event and the Shape Your City platform. This is to ensure that the platform doesn’t conflate input from multiple users of the same email.
- We suggest you do not use your Facebook profile to log into the webinar. This is so that the webinar platform can’t cross-reference you with your Facebook account.
- We remind you that whatever you contribute during the workshop is public and recorded, so please do not share sensitive information about yourself or others, and do not say anything you do not wish to enter the public domain.
- To protect the privacy of others we ask that:
- You do not record or photograph yourself, other participants, or the hosts during the webinar, unless permission is requested and given.
Commitment to community guidelines and social accountability
We strive to ensure the safety of our guests and speakers. There will be zero tolerance for those who promote violence against others on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity, religious affiliation, or different ability. Anyone who incites harm towards others will be removed at the discretion of our technical team and moderator.
Respect the opinions of others. Every participant brings information, points of view and ideas to contribute.
Share opportunities for airtime equally. If you’ve asked a question or shared a comment, ensure that new voices are heard before you contribute again
Practice self-care: if you need to get up or take a break, please feel free to do so.
