Event description

Description

Canada is the world leader in per-capita prescription opioid consumption. It’s likely that someone in your family or someone you know is using opioids. According to the Hamilton Spectator “More than 700 people are believed to have died of opioid-related causes across Ontario in 2015 — the province's third-leading cause of accidental death. Close to 50 of those deaths were in Hamilton… In the week ending April 2, 54 people reported to Hamilton emergency rooms for overdoses or drug-related issues.” Deaths related to opioid overdose are a public health crisis.

Naloxone is an antidote to opioids such as morphine, oxycodone and heroin and fentanyl. The simple life-saving Naxolone kit available at Ontario pharmacies could be the answer to preventing many of the overdose deaths involving opioids.

Participants in this training event will be able to recognize the symptoms of opioid overdose, learn the simple response protocol, and will feel capable of administering the drug (injection experience provided for every participant).

This program is co-sponsored by Church of the Ascension, Hamilton and the Diocese of Niagara.
