Event description

Description

Nathalie Paulin sings Gustav Mahler’s Songs from Des Knaben Wunderhorn (“The Youth’s Magic Horn”) with the Toronto Mozart Players on Saturday, November 4 at 8:00PM at Church of the Redeemer.

Mahler was obsessed with the anonymous German folk poems collected and published as Des Knaben Wunderhorn by Achim von Arnim and Clemens Bretano between 1805 and 1808. He found in the texts an idyllic depiction of pastoral German life. He was captivated by the themes of love, wandering, soldiers’ fate and children’s play expressed through the idealized folklore of the Romantic Naturpoesie. He set several of the poems for voice and piano in the 1880’s and in the following decade created eventual orchestrations and developed symphonic applications for the inspiring texts. “Urlicht” appears in the Second Symphony; “Es sungen drei Engel” was composed for the Third Symphony; and “Das himmlische Leben” was reorchestrated as the final movement in the Fourth Symphony. Mahler’s orchestrated songs are full of life, colour and contrast, enhancing the texts with nuance and depicting sounds of nature.

The Mozart Project is proud to welcome soprano Nathalie Paulin as featured guest artist with the Toronto Mozart Players in Mahler’s Songs from Des Knaben Wunderhorn arranged for chamber orchestra by Viennese composer Klaus Simon.

Do not miss this rare opportunity to hear this collection of exquisite songs performed by one of Canada’s most exceptional singers.
