Nature and Children - 101
Tue, 4 April 2017, 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM CDT
Come and hear the inspiring story of Discovery Centre’s journey towards reconnecting children to nature. Twelve years ago Discovery was much like any Canadian Child Care Centre, spending 95% of their time indoors. Since then they have increased their outdoor time by 400%, developed a natural playground, initiated the Two Week Outdoor Challenge, started Manitoba’s first Forest Nature School http://www.discoverycc.com/field-forest-nature-school/ and most recently challenging the education community to a Canada 150 Gardening Challenge http://www.discoverycc.com/manitoba-nature-action-collaborative-for-children/ . Learn what motivated them to make these changes, some of the many small steps in this journey looked like and how these changes have benefited both children and staff and children. We would love have you take your next steps in the journey or perhaps take your first steps in this direction. The future of our planet may depend on it!
Meet our Presenter:
Ron Blatz has been the Executive Director of Discovery Children’s Centre in Winnipeg for over 35 years. He has two overwhelming passions in his work life, one is to work towards a more gender balance workforce in the Child Care sector and the other is to continue to see children all across this province be reconnected with nature. With this in mind Ron along with a few friends started the Manitoba Nature Action Collaborative for Children (MNACC) which is a regional division of the World Forum NACC group https://connect.worldforumfoundation.org/focusedwork/nature/ . Ron has presented locally, nationally and internationally on this topic and inspired many to join in this wonderful journey.
*If anyone would like a tour of Discovery Children's Centre before the workshop please come at 6:00 pm*
