Nature & Landscape Photography Workshop,  Sept. 13-14, 2012


Hike the Highlands is pleased to announce they will be hosting a two day Nature & Landscape Photography Workshop on Sept. 13-14 with Wally Hayes, one of Nova Scotia's finest professional photographers. This workshop will be held before the start of the 9th Annual Hike the Highlands Festival Sept. 14-23.

This Nature & Landscape Photography workshop is limited to 20 participants. The registration fee for this two workshop is $75.00. You can register and pay online at Hike the Highlands website.  


Wally has been an active professional photographer for over 50 years. The first 15 years of his career were spent as a new photographer/reporter with The Canadian Press covering news assignments throughout North America, while working out of Halifax, Vancouver & Toronto.


For the last 25 years, Wally has photographed Nova Scotia extensively for the Nova Scotia Tourism department and his personal library, film & digital, numbers over 750,000 images. He is also know in the industry as ‘WallyVision’ for his elaborate multi-projector, multi-screen audiovisual shows which he has taken to audiences around the world.


Wally’s Cape Breton workshop will begin Thursday, February 13 in the evening with a session on Image Editing and Management beginning at 7pm. at St. John's Hall, Ingonish. This session will include tips to editing images to improve exposure, contrast & colour saturation; recovering detail in shadows and preventing highlights from washing out, cropping & straightening, plus other enhancements to improve image quality & sharpness. The management part would cover transferring and managing digital images in a computer. Please bring your laptop for this session, with images and photo-editing program .


On Friday, Sept. 14th , there will be one morning and one afternoon shooting sessions at appropriate locations in the, Black Brook area to cover the following subjects:

 a) Taking control of your camera using M, A, S, P exposure controls; exposure + & - corrections, etc

 b) Lighting and exposure. Tips on shooting in the woods in adverse lighting vs sunny days photography 

 c) Composition. Framing pics ie. landscapes, seascapes, portraits, etc

 d) Closeup photography -  plants and insects, etc. Choice of lenses, camera angles, etc.   

 e) Photographing wildlife - birds,  moose, etc. What lenses are best and how to handle ISO in difficult lighting conditions typical for wildlife photography

 f) Shooting waves & coastline;  waterfalls & streams. Choosing shutter speeds to create motion blur effects or razor sharp water droplets.


The workshop will end on Sept. 14th with an evening session – Opening Ceremonies of Hike the Highlands Festival beginning at 7:30 pm. at St. John's Hall, Ingonish. The evening will include an exhibition of participants work, a Wally Vision show and the closing show of last year’s festival.

Hike the Highlands Festival Society is a non-profit incorporated society with the Registry of Joint Stock Companies in Nova Scotia. The mandate of the organization is to host annually a hiking festival in September throughout the Highlands of Cape Breton.
