Event description
Join us in a discussion to explore how newcomer artists and arts professionals can continue to work in the arts and culture sector.

About this Event

WorkInCulture’s Navigating a Career in the Arts for Newcomers is seeking the professional insight of newcomer artists, arts professionals, artist serving organizations, settlement and economic development agencies, and other interested parties to better understand how newcomer artists and arts professionals achieve career success in Canada and the key barriers and challenges they face along the way.

Ontario's arts and culture sector is an important and inclusive source of employment for newcomers. New Canadians are 38% more likely to be employed in the arts and culture sector when compared with the provincial average for immigrant participation in the labour market, according to WorkInCulture's recent labour market insights report, MakingItWork. Nonetheless, despite the above average opportunities that arts and culture offers, a number of challenges and barriers persist.

The Navigating a Career in the Arts for Newcomers project has two main goals:

1. To understand how newcomer artists and arts professionals experience their transitions to the Canadian arts scene and labour market;

2. To understand what organizations and services, from arts and beyond, may be best suited to support this cohort.

This discussion aims to bring together (1) Toronto-based individuals with lived experience, (2) Toronto organizations that support newcomers and (3) the Arts & Culture sector to explore ideas, priorities, and possible solutions to improving career and professional outcomes for newcomer artists and arts professionals.

We would be delighted if you were able to lend your experience, expertise, voice, and vision to help us understand what it would take to enable all newcomer artists and arts professionals to thrive in Canada.
