Join us in navigating gender and sexual diversity in faith communities through a panel discussion with Pam Rocker, Keith Murray and Safa Rahman! Various topics surrounding the intersections of the topic will be covered. As participants of this panel discussion, you will also be able to ask questions that may have not been answered!
Pam Rocker is an atypical activist, award winning writer, speaker, and musician. Pam has worked for a decade for the full inclusion of LGBTQ2S+ people in faith communities and beyond. She was chosen as one of the Top 40 Under 40 in Calgary, and as one of the top 30 activists in Canada. She was a frequent panelist on CBC Radio's Unconventional Panel, is the Chair of Broadview Magazine, and Co-Host of the Sacred and Profane podcast. She is currently the Director of Affirming Connections and speaks and plays across the country.
Keith Murray, is a faith leader and transdisciplinary artist - a writer, designer, activist, speaker & facilitator. Murray currently leads the thriving LGBTQ2IA+ affirming ministries at Hillhurst United Church, a faith community profiled recently by Facebook as an international community leader. In this capacity Murray supports many LGBTQIA+ newcomers settling in Treaty 7 area and they lead an online worship service for an LGBTQ+ community in Uganda. Murray was the first resident artist at the Institute for Art Religion and Social Justice at Union Theological Seminary, and is a certified facilitator with the Canadian Institute for Transpersonal and Integrative Sciences. As an artist they have exhibited internationally and have worked as a curator and mentor to emerging artists, and has developed and facilitated programs for queer and trans youth, mental health workers and communities in western Canada. Murray is also a first year Seminary student at Vancouver School of Theology.
Safa Rahman is a member of the local chapter of El-Tawhid Juma Circle (also called Unity Mosque). Unity Mosque is a gender-equal, LGBTGQIA-affirming, non-hierarchical, progressive minded community in Calgary. We learn together, socialize, support each other, and host our own juma prayer on Fridays. We are shared leadership, and draw from our members' knowledge, experience and research of Islam. Safa has also been a member of the Canadian Council of Muslim Women for many years, and president of the local chapter for 8 years. CCMW has been committed to gender equity and draws much from the lives experiences of Canadians identifying as muslim women.
Professionally, Safa is a senior pelvic health physiotherapist, welcoming and treating all genders, with special interest and training in chronic pain and sexual health.
