Seminar details

Title: Cannabis Legalization and Environmental Health

Speaker: Angela Eykelbosh, Environmental Health and Knowledge Translation Scientist, National Collaborating Centre for Environmental Health and the BC Centre for Disease Control

Summary: Legalization of cannabis in 2018 will bring many challenges for public health professionals in Canada, ranging from the difficulties of establishing regulatory frameworks in a short period to the unknown consequences of widespread availability of this psychoactive substance. However, beyond the effects of the drug itself, cannabis cultivation (whether commercially or at home) brings with it certain environmental health (EH) risks that can be mitigated through public education. This webinar will summarize concerns around specific EH risks (pest control products, chemical and biological contaminants, household mould and humidity control, and fire and electrical hazards), as well as frame some of the key considerations for risk communication around cannabis cultivation.

Speaker Bio:

Angela holds a PhD in Resource Management and Environmental Studies, as well as previous degrees in physiology and toxicology. Angela is also an alumna of the Bridge program at UBC, an interdisciplinary research training program that unites public health, engineering, and policy. Her knowledge translation work covers many topic areas, but generally seeks to help knowledge users find and contextualize scientific evidence relevant to environmental public health issues.

Please note: Citrix GoToMeeting webinar capacity is limited to 100 attendees. To accommodate this, please consider attending the webinar as part of a group. If you are unable to attend after registering, please cancel your registration prior to the event. Thank you!

These sessions are eligible for CIPHI Professional Development Hours. If you would like a letter of credit validation for CIPHI PDHs, please specify this on the registration form. Letters are sent out annually in January.
