Event description
A virtuosic program of rarely heard contemporary works inspired by art & literature of the past

About this event

Join Erato Ensemble for our most ambitious concert yet!

Luciano Berio's "Cries of London" was originally written for the six members of the King’s Singers in 1973. In 1976 Berio expanded the work for the eight voices of the Swingle Singers. The words are compiled from phrases used by street vendors in old London, but the music is in no way a stylisation of folk-tunes. It is more like an echo of the street vendors’ voices, as the composer absorbed them as they rebounded from the walls of the old houses. This performance likely marks the Vancouver premiere.

Riccardo Perugini's "Il Caso MacBeth" (2019) re-imagines the sleepwalking scene from MacBeth as a psychiatry session, scored for Mezzo-Soprano, Clarinet and Piano. Erato is proud to present the North American premiere of this bold work by this upcoming Italian composer.

Priaulx Rainier's "The Bee Oracles" (1969) is a mystical setting of Edith Sitwell's poetry. Composed for renowned tenor Peter Pears, this rarely heard masterpiece is scored for Tenor, Flute, Oboe, Violin, Cello, and Harpsichord. This performance marks the North American premiere.

Lester Trimble's "Four Fragments from The Canterbury Tales" (1958), is a cheerily Stravinskian setting of portions of the Chaucer in Old English, set for Soprano, Flute, Clarinet, and Harpsichord.

Tickets are general admission, but seating will be assigned upon arrival. Doors open at 7:00pm. Arrive early for best seats.

Organizer Erato Ensemble

Organizer of Neo-Classic Tales

Erato’s mission is to foster and develop the growing repertoire of vocal/instrumental chamber music: honouring, yet distinct from the traditions of art song, choral music, and opera. We do this by supporting the creation of new work, and presenting high-quality artistic performances in public places, thereby advancing the public’s appreciation of the arts.
