Discover tools for nervous system regulation with Dr. Shawna Darou, ND

About this Event

A significant missing piece in health maintenance, and especially in treating any chronic illness is nervous system regulation. The reason this is important is that quite simply, the body only heals in a state of rest.

We’re living in a go-go-go culture, rushing from place to place, constant time deadlines, sensory stimulation around the clock, and work that doesn’t go away when you get home… Our bodies are designed to handle small, intermittent bouts of stress, but when stress becomes chronic it can lead to all sorts of issues – cognitive, emotional, physical and behavioural.

On top of this, illness itself creates a stress response that perpetuates this issue. Chronic pain is a stressor, dealing with chronic infection is a stressor (for example Lyme disease, Epstein Barr virus and others), hormone imbalance is a stressor, and inflammation in general is a stressor. When you put the cultural overdrive together with the stress of illness, it perpetuates a stress response that’s hard to get out of.

Signs that your nervous system is out of balance include:

  • being unable to relax
  • startling easily
  • cold hands and feet
  • anxiety and insomnia
  • heart palpitations
  • chronic headaches or migraines
  • poor digestion (often constipation)
  • hypoglycaemia
  • frequent and urgent urination
  • sensitivity to bright lights
  • feeling of a lump in the throat
  • pounding heart when you lie down in bed

What this means is that it is extremely important to learn how to balance your nervous system and turn off this chronically activated stress response. This is what puts the body in a state where it can finally recover and heal.

What you will learn in this talk:

  1. How your nervous system works to respond to daily stresses.
  2. The way that chronic illness of all types perpetuates a chronically activated stress response.
  3. How our stresses stack up: emotional stress, inflammation, lack of sleep, blood sugar regulation, toxin exposure, infections, pain, etc. We can reduce our reactive threshold by reducing the total load of stressors.
  4. Learn several tools and resources to create long-term balance in your nervous system, and how this puts your body in a state that is ready to recover, repair and heal.
