Event description

Description

Workshop Description

The N2 Workshop is a province-wide collaborative learning event among Neuroscience graduate students and postdoctoral fellows and clinical Neurology/Neurosurgery residents. The goal of the workshop is to establish a learning dialogue and a collaborative research environment for future clinicians and basic science researchers involved in the understanding and development of new solutions for neuroscience problems and the care of people with neurological disease.

Purpose

  • To promote understanding and awareness of recent discoveries and knowledge gaps/needs in medical research areas from both clinical and basic science perspectives

  • To learn how to develop a research grant proposal to address these knowledge gaps, including clinical and basic science expertise and resources

  • To establish a dialogue between trainee clinicians and trainee scientists that will facilitate future collaborative research projects and communication

Format

The N2 Workshop will focus on the basic science and clinical perspectives of five major neuroscience health areas:

  • Vascular Biology

  • Epilepsy

  • Peripheral Nerve Disease

  • Neurodegeneration

  • Inflammation

Each session will include the following:

  • 20 minute resident clinical case presentation

  • 40 minute scientist or clinician-scientist presentation on fundamentals of research into the disease

  • 20 minute round table question generation – each table will include clinical and science trainees, to discuss what question to target within the disease area of interest and begin discussing how to develop a grant

  • 40 minute Question and Answer session

  • 1 session will be on grant writing, focusing on selling your research questions and engaging collaborators

The primary objectives of the sessions will be:

  1. For Neurology and Neurosurgery residents to explore basic concepts that underpin five basic clinical Neurological and Neurosurgical problems

  2. For Neuroscience graduate students and postdoctoral fellows to learn of how common Neurological and Neurosurgical problems present to clinicians and what challenges they bring with them

  3. To develop specific research questions around each of the main themes of the meeting

  4. To explore principles of grant preparation and writing: how to get your idea funded!
