Newcomer Youth, Sport and Cultural Competency Workshop

Wondering why the Syrian refugee youth on your soccer team have missed the last three practices in the month of June?
Looking for ways to encourage African-Caribbean immigrant families to join your community swim program?
Uncertain about why newcomer South Asian youth are reluctant to go into the change room?
Learn how your sports or recreation organization can effectively and sensitively engage with diverse newcomer refugee and immigrant children and youth. Develop culturally sensitive approaches to better connect newcomer participants with the broader community.
Please note registration priority will be given to recreation and sports staff.
Sport for Life Society and the Inter-Cultural Association of Greater Victoria (ICA) invite community recreation and sport leaders to this timely workshop on how to better understand and work effectively with newcomer children, youth and their families. The workshop will focus on understanding the cultural practices of diverse communities, with a special focus on Syrian refugee families.
The workshop takes place on Monday October 17 from 5:30pm-8:00pm at the Masjid Al-Iman Mosque. The workshop will be facilitated by Steven Lorenzo Baileys- Community Development Coordinator at ICA.
This participatory and interactive workshop will help you:
understand the 10 common dimensions found in every culture including- understanding family relationships and dynamics, cross culturally appropriate forms of greeting one another, etc.
recognize structural barriers in your organization that often prevent or discourage newcomer participation
increase awareness about your personal bias and assumptions that can unknowingly impact the recreational experiences of newcomer participants
learn about basic cross cultural communication tools to use with newcomer participants and their families
The workshop will include a short tour of the Mosque and overview of the Islamic faith and cultural practices.
A light dinner and refreshments will be provided.
