Event description

Description

Join renowned landscape photographers Curtis Jones and Wayne Simpson in historic Bonavista, Newfoundland August 11-13, 2018. Explore your creative vision and go back in time during three days of world-class coastlines and hands-on landscape photography instruction. With the renowned sea stacks and craggy cliffs of Spillars Cove among your backdrops and personalized hands-on instruction in the field, it’s sure to be a memorable learning experience in a location that is best described as “otherworldly”!

An island boy born and bred Curtis Jones has spent most of his career saturating himself in the northern regions of the planet, dividing his residency between Newfoundland and Nunavut, Canada. Over the last decade, his adventurous lifestyle has taken him across the Gobi Desert, on a 2300 km unsupported traverse of the Greenland Ice Cap, and most recently Antarctica. Curtis's personal vision to distil an image to its most essential value through the use of minimalism and negative space is a complementary contrast to his inviting, and inclusive teaching style. Collaborating with world-class athletes, production teams, and local cultures and communities, he has built his career delivering a personal view of the raw, wild, and often untamed. His work has been seen in National Geographic Explorer, Canadian Geographic, The Globe and Mail, Huffington Post and more. Always hunting for the essence of a place, he is often seen leading photography workshops along striking coastlines and ice filled shores, sharing his appreciation for adventure with others. A collector of interesting stories, Curtis is rarely seen far from a camera, tent, or a good punchline.

Based in the artistic village of Elora, Ontario, Wayne Simpson is a professional photographer who specializes in Landscape photography and dramatic portraiture.

Simpson’s ultimate goal, whether he is photographing a person or a place, is to create images that evoke emotion and a sense of mystery. His award-winning landscape photography showcases the mood, drama, and extraordinary beauty of the planet’s wilder places and inspires the viewer to appreciate the more subtle details.

As an educator, Wayne Simpson conducts portrait and landscape photography workshops throughout Canada – from the peaks of Banff National Park to the beautiful coastline of Newfoundland.

Simpson’s images have been published in such magazines as Outdoor Photography Canada, Outdoor Photography Magazine, Canadian Rockies Annual, League Magazine, Legion Magazine, Integrated Health Practitioner Magazine, Canadian Geographic, Nature Photographers Network and Dark Beauty, as well as in countless books around the world.

Itinerary

Saturday, August 11th, 2018

4 PM to 7 PM: Mik’s Little Haven (16 Powells Lane, Bonavista, NL). Introductions and meet-up. Curtis and Wayne will each give a short talk explaining their individual approaches to landscape photography as well as share some techniques and equipment related tips in preparation for the hands-on portion of the workshop. Please note that we will be departing from the meeting location for our first field session so participants are encouraged to bring their camera equipment with them.

7 PM to 10 PM: First field session (location TBD, but within a reasonable proximity to our initial meeting location). Please note that it is common to see a variety of species of birds along the coast so an assortment of focal lengths ranging from very wide (14mm for example) to very long (500mm for example) could prove useful! Of course, this is primarily a landscape workshop so we recommend a range between 16mm and 200mm as an ideal starting point – anything beyond that range is a bonus!

Sunday, August 12th, 2018

5:30 AM – Meet and depart for a sunrise shoot in the Spillars Cove area. This will be a full day that will see us shoot from sunrise until sunset. Although there will be scheduled meal breaks during the day, participants are encouraged to pack food/snacks to keep up their energy levels. Participants will be pointed to any amenities in the area in case of washroom, food breaks and coffee top ups. Curtis and Wayne will be on hand to answer any questions and give on-the-spot demonstrations when necessary.

Monday, August 13th, 2018

5:30 AM departure for a full morning of shooting along historic Cape Bonavista, and Dungeons provincial park, capturing the magic of early light a stone’s throw away from where John Cabot first made landfall in the New World in 1497. After a great final morning of photography, we will meet up for a late, but well-earned breakfast.

10 AM – 12 PM – Editing, Critique and Q&A Session

NOTE: The itinerary can and will change based on weather conditions, among other factors. Participants are expected to be flexible to the group’s needs.
