NewWest FilmFest 2018 will present five feature film screenings and a special shorts film festival over the course of three nights; October 19th. 20th and 21st.

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 19

7PM TALK! For many years, Vancouver and the Lower Mainland was a hotbed of political and social discourse because of Talk radio programs that featured dynamic hosts who stirred the pot. You'll rue the loss of these local and regional voices today after watching this. Local filmmaker will attend.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 20

7PM TRUTH DETECTIVES – Innovative technologies, ranging from the everyday use of cellphones to computer modelling and more, are aiding in the prosecution of war criminals at the International Criminal Court in the Hague. See fascinating case studies from around the world. European-made. North American Premiere!!

9PM DETAINEE X A young Muslim American is ripped from his home and sent to a rendition site based on the flimsiest of evidence that he has terrorist connections. He undergoes dire circumstances and heavy torture. A military lawyer is his only hope. Canadian-made.

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 21

3PM BC SHORTS – An absolutely wonderfully diverse showcase of shorts made by local film-makers, from the wacky to weird, the heartwarming to frightening, the off-beat to the mysterious– this is a not-to-miss event. Lots of the filmmakers will be there for Q&A.

5PM HOME & HOPE. Two documentaries are featured. HOME is a heartwarming story of a home set up for a hundred stateless, impoverished, exploited and lost children of a the so-called Golden Triangle at the junction of Thailand, Myanmar by a young woman. Canadian fillmmakers.

HOPE is a documentary featuring a young local woman who has suffered a debilitating neurological order since childhood. She interviews others and offers her own thoughts about how one finds hope when in despair. The filmmakers will attend.

7PM BEING RACHEL – This Montreal documentary tells the story of teens and young adults who create a play to tell their stories of living with disabilities. It is chock full of starts and stops, heartwarming and anguishing moments.

  • Pass holders: we ask that you arrive a minimum of 10 minutes before each screening. At that time, we will be releasing available tickets for Rush sales and may not be able to grant you access to the theatre due to maximum capacity regulations
  • A festival membership is required to enter each screening
  • A valid ID is required for student/senior tickets
  • All films at Landmark Theatre, 800 Carnarvon St. Skytrain Level unless otherwise noted.
