Event description

Description

Every year, the Office of Sustainability along with student volunteers participate in the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup. This initiative is presented by Loblaw Companies Limited in partnership with World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and Ocean Wise as a conservation and cleanup initiative, and is one of the largest environmental community engagement programs in Canada. Community members are encouraged to get involved with water quality and conservation issues in their communities. Shoreline litter is a serious issue, and since the beginning of this initiative approximately 1.1 million kilograms of litter has been removed across Canadian waterways.

This year we have decided to tackle the clean-up in an area that has never had a registered clean-up completed before! Along a portion of the Welland Canals Parkway (meeting location is 1932 Welland Canals Parkway in the museum parking lot). All the material that you need for the clean-up will be provided (bags, gloves, data collection sheets, and we even have a couple of garbage pickers); please remember to bring water and a snack if you think it will be necessary and dress for the weather! This event is rain or shine.

If you are interested in participating, please register through Eventbrite. For more information about the Great Canadian Shoreline Clean-up visit: https://www.shorelinecleanup.ca/.

FAQs

Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?

You are not required to bring ID with you to the event, but Niagara College students will be asked for their school email so we can track volunteer hours in our system. There is no minimum age requirement for this event.

What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?

There are bus routes available that will drop you off within walking distance of the event location. Parking is free, but we do encourage carpooling to this event to minimize our negative environmental impacts.

What should I bring with me to the event?

It is recommended that you bring a reusable water bottle and a snack to the event. Also dress for the weather on the day - if necessary items like: raincoats, rain bots, hats, sunglasses, sunscreen, etc. may be a good idea.

How can I contact the organizer with any questions?

Email Amber Schmucker, Niagara College's Sustainability Program & Outreach Coordinator (aschmucker@niagaracollege.ca).

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

No! Save the trees.

Is it ok if the name on my ticket or registration doesn't match the person who attends?

Yes - but we will ask you to check-in on the event day with your name and info.
