Event description

Description

This is a one day workshop exploring the contemporary hand of Neuland, designed by Rudolph Koch. These letters were originally drawn and then carved into metal making the letterform changes with the use of varied media. Nevertheless, they retain a very distinctive quality and are a must-hand in our calligraphic tool box. We will explore this highly manipulated letterform while breaking a few rules along the way.

The morning hours will be spent learning how to create this upper case hand using a chisel nib, being particularly aware of the quality of line widths in order to achieve consistent weight.

In the afternoon, working in both grey scale and colour, we will further explore this hand's unique spacing and create a minimum of 2 broad size pieces. These pieces will push you to explore and focus on some key elements of artistic design that help to add that special touch to your pieces.

Supplies required:

Speedball C1 or C2 and holder OR Pilot Parallel Pen 3.8

Higgins Eternal Ink or Walnut Ink or Pelikan 4001

Good Quality pencil (F or H in hardness)

18 or 24 inch ruler

Practice and project paper will be supplied.

Optional: Pigment or monoline markers, watercolour, gouache, will be available for people who do not have any. (3 basic colours are all that is needed.)
