About this event
Do you have a passion and love for reading? Do you like delving into a good read and discussing it with others who are similarly passionate about books?
In honour of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence, Nisa Homes and Faith & Femininity are partnering to bring you an exclusive Book Club event!
This book club event will provide a platform for women who are searching for clarifications on the issues of domestic violence and the rights of women in Islam versus culture. After reading What Islam Says about Domestic Violence: A Guide for Helping Muslim Families by Zainab Alwani & Salma Abugideri, participants will get the chance to share their thoughts and enter a meaningful discussion with fellow bibliophiles!
This session will be led by Ustadha Rumaysa and Zainab Bint Younus of Faith & Femininity Book Club and Yasmine Youssef, Program Director of Nisa Homes.
DETAILS
The book club will meet on Saturday, November 26th at 3 PM EST (12 PM PST) during the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. BOOK
What Islam Says about Domestic Violence: A Guide for Helping Muslim Families by Zainab Alwani & Salma Abugideri
Abstract:
What Islam Says About Domestic Violence: A Guide for Helping Muslim Families & Workers is the first published work that presents an Islamic framework on domestic violence.
The book's methodological contribution is a potential model for how to read the issue of domestic violence from the Qur'an and engage the ḥadīth holistically in the light of the Qurʾānic message and objectives. The authors were able to construct the framework based on defining the relevant Qur'anic concepts.
The Qur’an identifies the behaviors consistent with domestic violence under the umbrella of oppression (dhulm and udwaan). Oppression is a broad category that includes any type of injustice against another person and is clearly prohibited in Islam. The family as the cornerstone of society in Islam was presented as a model. The family structure, gender roles, marriage and divorce laws, reconciliation and financial matters are among the issues that are addressed in detail in the book.
This book is unique in that it addresses Muslims and mainstream advocates and providers, presenting the issue from the Islamic perspective. The book gives a better understanding of religious and cultural values and how they can be used as resources to prevent domestic violence. It also emphasizes that religion and culture should never be used to justify abusive behavior. The publication seeks to promote attitudes and beliefs that emphasize justice, freedom and family harmony. It outlines strategies that may be used as a model for domestic violence prevention. For almost two decades, this book has been used by great number of organizations, academics, researchers, as well as in training sessions for Imams, DV advocates, social workers and beyond.
**All participants are expected to have read all (or part) of the book before the discussion. **
