Event description

Description

Every year, Defence for Children International - Canada hosts a lecture in honour of Grant Lowery. The purpose of the lectures is to share Grant’s passionate advocacy for young people through the experiences and insights of Canada’s most talented and accomplished advocates for children’s rights.

In Canada, the detention of children whose parents and family have no status or await immigration or refugee determination face an increased threat. The recent Ontario budget has cut Legal Aid to immigration and refugee claimants. Additionally, the Office of the Provincial Advocate for Children and Youth has been closed, its advocacy function around the neglect and abuse of children eliminated entirely, and its investigative function has been reduced and folded into the Ombudsman’s Office.

More children may indeed end up with No Life for a Child.

Join us on June 4th as Immigration and Refugee lawyer Hanna Gros, and Senior Counsel at the Refugee Law Office of Legal Aid Ontario Andrew Brouwer, uncover the deficient legal underpinnings and detrimental practical implications of Canadian immigration detention for children.

The lecture will also include a panel discussion by young people who have had lived experience with the immigration system.
